CLIFTON FORGE — The Alleghany Highlands Arts and Crafts Center has designed a mat cutting workshop to help artists of all skill levels to present their work to the greatest possible advantage — and maybe get some gifts ready for Christmas.
Mat cutting isn’t all that hard to learn, it just takes some practice.
Class size is limited so participants have ample opportunity to cut, mount and prepare once piece, usually with materials enough to do others as well. Students who successfully complete the mat cutting class may use the center’s facilities to cut their own mats for the cost of the materials.
A properly cut mat – the cardboard piece between the glass and the artwork – can enhance the artwork as well as protect it.
In this class students will learn how to cut a beveled mat, mount and back the work properly and shrink-wrap it in protective film. Proper presentation and how to select a frame to fit your work will also be covered.
Those who have successfully completed the mat cutting class may use the center’s equipment later.
Please bring one work on paper to be matted — watercolor, print, photograph — no needlework or canvas, please.
This class fills quickly and class size is limited.
The class will be held on Saturday, Feb 7, from 1-3:30 p.m. with instructor Michael Farrar
The fee is $40 and includes one full sheet mat board, one sheet foam core and shrink wrap.
To register for the workshop, stop by the arts and crafts center on Ridgeway Street in Clifton Forge or call 862-4447.
