COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – The 2026 Alleghany Invitational brought its largest field in the event’s 12-year history to the Jackson River Sports Complex Saturday morning, with nearly 70 teams and more than 1,000 runners competing in the middle and high school races.
The competitive field produced several strong finishes for Alleghany.
The Alleghany girls finished third out of 28 teams, while the boys placed 16th out of 39 teams. The Cougars’ top four boys finishers were all freshmen or sophomores.
In the middle school races, the Alleghany boys finished third, while the girls placed sixth.
“The highlights of the day for our team were 3rd place finishes for the Varsity girls as well as the middle school boys,” Alleghany Head Coach Jeremy Bartley said. The meet also produced numerous personal-best times for Alleghany runners.
Bartley said the response to this year’s event was positive, with coaches and athletes offering favorable comments throughout the day. He also credited the City of Covington employees for their work preparing and painting the course.
“The city employees outdid themselves with course preparation and painting,” Bartley said.
This year’s invitational marked another milestone for an event that has grown into one of the area’s larger cross country meets.
