GREENSBORO, Nc. (VR) – Former Alleghany Cougar Laken Tingler helped Hollins University open Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Wednesday against Guilford College in North Carolina.
Guilford took control early and went on to defeat Hollins 3-0, winning 25-7, 25-11 and 25-22.
Tingler played a key role in Hollins’ offense, combining with Evelyn Harris to provide assists on nine of the team’s 11 kills.
Guilford scored the first 12 points of the match before taking the opening set 25-7. The Quakers built their advantage with a 13-4 run in the second set to take a 25-11 win.
Hollins showed its best push in the third set. After trailing 11-6, the Green and Gold answered with a 4-1 run and continued to battle late. Hollins scored four of the final five points, but Guilford held on for the 25-22 victory.
Cassidy Henderson led Hollins with five kills, while Dara Peterson and Aliyah Lightsey added two each.
Norah Madrey recorded three blocks, with Henderson and Lightsey adding two apiece. Meredith Crawley led the defense with six digs.
The loss dropped Hollins to 0-1 in ODAC play.
