CLIFTON FORGE, VA (VR) – The Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) Historical Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, founded in 1969, and it brings the American railroad experience to life through archival collections, publications, and museum operations; as the society explains, it supports itself through museum admissions, retail sales, paid memberships and public donations.
When asked what can people expect when visiting the C&O Railway Heritage Center, they stated visitors can expect a museum and interpretive walk-through experience featuring “fully restored ex-C&O passenger cars, freight cars, work equipment, and locomotives,” along with indoor and outdoor displays, scale models, and replica railroad structures arranged to tell “the story of American railroading and the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway.”
The connection between the C&O Railroad and Clifton Forge was significant: the town served as an important C&O hub where locomotives were serviced and readied for travel across the Allegheny Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Supported by extensive shops and rail yards for freight and coal, the hub also included facilities such as icing, laundry, and a passenger coach yard—an archetypal example of American railroading.
The C&O Railway Heritage Center is a one of a kind place to visit. It combines a walk-through experience with preserved equipment with interpretive displays and replicas. Upcoming events include “All Aboard the Candy Express Trunk or Treat” on Saturday, October 31st from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, featuring “Candy Costume Contest, Trunk Decorating Contest, Rides on the Little C&O Train, Games, and Food by the Clifton Forge Little League,”
Those interested in decorating a trunk and handing out candy are encouraged to contact the C&O Historical Society.
For holiday shopping, the Depot Giftshop will operate a “Holiday Gift Shoppe” beginning the weekend before Thanksgiving and continuing through the weekend prior to Christmas.
Kids and adults alike will enjoy C&O. Train enthusiasts will also enjoy the museum, where the history of railroading comes to life through real stories. It’s a great fit for railfans and transportation-history lovers who want to understand how locomotives, tracks, and railroad life worked—and how they shaped the communities along the route.
