CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (VR) –  Alleghany High School’s appeal to move from Class 3, Region C to Class 2, Region B was denied Aug. 25 by the Virginia High School League Alignment Appeals Committee.

The VHSL Alignment Committee previously made its recommendations for the 2027-28 through 2030-31 four-year alignment plan. The Alignment Appeals Committee met Aug. 25 to consider all appeals and opposition to the recommended plan, with appellants subsequently notified of the committee’s decisions.

Dan Hornick moved to deny Alleghany’s request, with Major Warner seconding. The committee voted 0-5 to deny the appeal.

The committee cited Alleghany being more than the 1% allowance and determined that participation in a digital academy was a school-based decision.

Alleghany had requested placement in Class 2, Region B rather than its recommended assignment in Class 3, Region C. The Virginian Review reached out to the Alleghany Athletic department for comment and they declined. We are told that Alleghany will not file again.

The five-member committee included Hornick, superintendent of Orange County Public Schools; Warner, superintendent of Fauquier County Public Schools; Jeffrey Cassell, superintendent of Waynesboro City Public Schools; Mike Goforth, superintendent of Wise County Public Schools; and Tony Brads, superintendent of Culpeper County Public Schools.

VHSL Executive Director Ty Gafford and VHSL staff members also attended the hearing.

The matter is scheduled to go before the VHSL Executive Committee Sept. 8.
