HARRISONBURG, Va. – An aggressive attack by James Madison women’s soccer propelled the Dukes past George Mason, 2-1, at Sentara Park on Sunday night.

JMU (1-1-0) placed seven of its 11 shots on goal, applying enough offensive pressure to secure its first win of the season. Ginny Lackey paced the JMU offense with a goal and an assist. Aleigha Arndt grabbed her first goal of the season, with Selma Rajakangas tallying an assist. Sofia DeCerb handled starting goalkeeper duties, playing all 90 minutes and making six saves.

GMU (1-1-0) was led by Molly Starner’s lone goal. Libby Davy played all 90 minutes in goal, making five saves.

Quote from Head Coach Joshua Walters, Sr.

Tonight was a better performance from the squad. Still some growth we want, but it was nice to see some good performances.

How it Happened

  • George Mason’s first attempt on goal came in the third minute, a strike that DeCerb saved.
  • Lackey managed to break free from the defense in the 19th minute, burying a shot off her left foot to give the Dukes a 1-0 advantage.
  • Each team placed a shot on goal in the final minute of the first half, with both resulting in saves.
  • The Dukes doubled their lead in the 56th minute with a goal from Arndt; however, GMU responded with a score of their own in the 59th minute to cut its deficit back to one.
  • George Mason only managed two more in the half, allowing the Dukes to take home their first win of the season.

Game Notes

  • Lackey has scored in back-to-back games to begin the season.
  • DeCerb tied her season high with six saves.

Up Next

The Dukes will hit the road to take on Georgia at Sanford Stadium on Thursday, August 20th. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be streamed on the SEC Network.
