Kymari Rice and Nathan Blankenship, members of the Alleghany football team, recently showed that character goes far beyond what happens on the field.
A woman had fallen after missing a step. Rice immediately ran over and helped her to her feet. Blankenship grabbed her buggy and helped her safely to her vehicle.
Neither hesitated. Neither waited for someone else to step in. They saw someone who needed help and acted.
It was a simple act of kindness, but one worth recognizing. In a world where young people often receive attention for the wrong reasons, Rice and Blankenship provided a reminder that there are plenty of young people doing the right thing when no one is asking them to.
Their actions showed respect, compassion and character — qualities that deserve just as much recognition as anything accomplished on the field.
