COVINGTON, VA (VR) –  Construction continues to move forward on the Rayon Bridge replacement project, with work now shifting to the next major phase. The Virginian Review recently reached out to the Virginia Department of Transportation and the area’s construction engineer for an update on the project.

According to VDOT, construction of the bridge pier has been completed. Crews will now focus on building the two bridge abutments, a process expected to take the next couple of months. To this point, construction has had little impact on traffic. However, motorists should expect occasional flagging operations in the coming months as contractors begin tie-in work.

Contractors are aiming to complete the bridge substructure this fall. If that timeline is met, girders are expected to be set by the end of 2026. Weather permitting, bridge deck construction would begin in the spring of 2027, with the new bridge expected to open to traffic sometime during the summer of 2027.

The final phase of the project will involve demolishing the existing Rayon Bridge, which is currently scheduled for late summer to fall of 2027.
