COVINGTON, Va (VR) – Joel Bradshaw controlled Game One from the start, striking out 12 and allowing just one hit as Alleghany’s JV baseball team shut out Staunton in the opener of Thursday’s doubleheader.
Bradshaw set the tone early, recording three strikeouts in the first inning and never easing up. He struck out the side again in the third and added two more punchouts in both the fourth and fifth innings, consistently getting ahead in counts and finishing hitters.
Staunton managed just a single by Mason Dawson in the second inning. The visitors never advanced a runner past first base.
Alleghany provided just enough offense in the first. Talin Raether reached and eventually scored on a wild pitch for the game’s only run. Bradshaw added a single in the inning, while Levi Elmore and Lennox Webb each collected hits later in the game.
Despite limited scoring, Alleghany kept pressure on the bases with walks from Raether and Carson Cosby.
Defensively, the Cougars were clean and backed Bradshaw throughout, converting routine outs and limiting Staunton’s chances.
Alleghany’s JV bats exploded for a massive first-inning outburst and never slowed down in a lopsided Game Two win over Staunton on Thursday.
The Cougars hung four runs in the opening frame, highlighted by a Talin Raether double, RBI singles from Carson Cosby and Ben Skidmore, and aggressive baserunning that forced multiple passed balls.
Alleghany broke the game wide open in the second, sending the lineup around in a huge inning fueled by hits and Staunton errors. Raether delivered a two-run single, Lennox Webb and Skidmore each added RBI hits, and Jace Cantrell drove in runs while reaching on an error. The Cougars capitalized on walks, hit-by-pitches, and defensive miscues to pile on and push the lead into run-rule territory.
Webb and Skidmore led the offense with multiple hits and RBIs, while Raether added extra-base power and run production. Cosby reached base repeatedly and scored multiple times as Alleghany kept constant pressure on the bases.
On the mound, Skidmore started and struck out multiple hitters over two innings, limiting Staunton’s chances. Raether closed it out, adding more strikeouts while working around a late run in the fourth.
Staunton managed just a handful of baserunners and scored once in the final inning, but never threatened after Alleghany’s early surge.
