COVINGTON, Va. (VR) — Alleghany Highlands Public Schools will host a PreK/Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI) registration event on Thursday, March 19, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Jeter-Watson Elementary School. Families interested in enrolling their children in the VPI program at any
AHPS elementary school are encouraged to attend.

VPI is a state-funded program that provides high-quality preschool education for children who meet certain criteria. It is designed to give students the academic and social skills they need to thrive in school.

Parents attending the registration event are encouraged to bring documents that will help determine eligibility, such as:
 A recent physical examination record
 Immunization (shot) records
 The child’s birth certificate

To make the process even more convenient, families can also apply online through the Smart2Start portal at https://families.smart2start.org. Additional information about the VPI program is available at smart2start.org or by contacting the elementary school in the family’s home attendance zone. Early applications are appreciated to ensure smooth enrollment.

AHPS news and events are regularly updated on Facebook at AHPublicSchools and on the division website at www.ahps.k12.va.us. School for students in the 2026–2027 academic year begins on Aug. 12, 2026.
