COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – Alleghany jumped out early and never looked back, shutting out Northside 9-0 Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars erupted for five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take control. Kaylee Nicely delivered a key double to left field that scored Ava Howard. Addyson Neff followed with an RBI single, and Abby Patterson added a run-scoring single to left. Emma Skidmore later reached on an error that allowed another run to score as Alleghany built a 5-0 lead.

Alleghany added another run in the second inning. Maddy Lowry reached and later scored when Nicely singled to center, extending the lead to 6-0.

The Cougars pushed the advantage to 7-0 in the third. Peyton Broughman singled to left and eventually came home when Skidmore singled to left field.

Alleghany capped the scoring with two runs in the sixth. Ava Howard singled to center and Paige Webb followed with a single to left. Nicely then lined a double to center, driving in Howard. Webb later scored on a passed ball to give the Cougars a 9-0 lead.

Nicely led Alleghany at the plate with two hits, including a double, and multiple RBIs. Howard, Webb, Callie Uzzell, Patterson, Broughman, Neff and Skidmore also recorded hits for the Cougars.

On the mound, Neff and Skidmore combined to hold Northside to just one hit. The Cougars struck out 11 Viking batters. Skidmore closed the game in the seventh inning by striking out the side to seal the shutout victory.
