COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – On Nov. 10, Curtis A. Smith VFW Post 1033, supported by auxiliary members, joined with Jeter-Watson Elementary School in their annual tribute to area veterans.
The program began with the presentation of the flags by Josiah Jordan and Liam Tingler, followed by the National Anthem performed by Romania Jordan, Laura Snead, and Kelley Calhoun. America the Beautiful was played by Josh Saville, Kelly McKinnell, Shannon Hogan, and Desmond Taylor. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Post Quartermaster, Bill Atherholt.
Atherholt gave opening remarks, thanking all those who held the ceremony to honor our veterans. Atherholt welcomed all veterans and auxiliary members and introduced a very special guest, Marion Noel, a 100-year-old World War II veteran. A moment of silence was observed for those who did not return.
Remarks were given by Chief Chris Smith, Covington Police Department, who talked about his military service.
Amanda Burns read a veteran’s poem expressing gratitude and remembrance for military veterans and heroes. Students from Ms. Burns’ and Ms. Dawn K.’s class held up letters spelling VETERAN.
Valiant warriors, brave and true,
Enduring battles, they fought for you.
Thankful hearts, we honor their fight ,
Every sacrifice, a beacon of light.
Remembering those who served with pride,
All our gratitude, we cannot hide.
Never forgetting the price they paid,
Saluting our heroes, their courage displayed.
Music, music, music could be heard as the classes sang patriotic songs under the direction of music teacher, Kelly McKinnell:
Early Childhood and Pre-Kindergarten: You’re A Grand Old Flag
Kindergarten and First Grade – Thank You Soldiers
Second and Third Grade – I Love My Country
Fourth and Fifth Grade – Armed Forces Medley
How wonderful to hear these songs sung with such enthusiasm. Thank you, students and music teacher, for this great addition to the program. Work on the United States Space (USSF) for next year. It will be great.
School principal, Cynthia Morgan, and vice-principal, Dee Tickner, thanked the veterans with these words, “To our honored guests – our veterans – we thank you not only for your bravery in uniform, but for the example you continue to set for our students and the community each day. You’ve shown us that true leadership is rooted in service to others”.
“To our students, remember that freedom isn’t free – it’s protected and preserved by men and women who answer a call greater than themselves. And to our staff, families, and community – thank you for helping us make today a meaningful tribute. Together, we continue to teach gratitude, respect, and the importance of giving back.
“From all of us at Jeter-Watson Elementary, we extend our deepest appreciation and respect to every veteran, past and present. Thank you for your service, your strength, and your sacrifice.
“We are forever grateful”.
The program ended with the retirement of the flags and a red rose given to each veteran to say “thank you.” Refreshments were served to those in attendance.
Thank you, Christmas Mother, for being a part of this special day.
Mrs. Morgan, your words were a touching tribute and constant reminder of the sacrifices made by so many for the freedoms we enjoy in this great land we call America.
