Robert George “Spud” Howard, Jr., age 92, of 3317 Longdale Station Road, Clifton Forge, Virginia died at his residence Sunday, February 9, 2020, surrounded by his loving wife of 71 years and family.Spud was born December 22, 1927 in Springwood, Virginia to the late Robert George Howard, Sr. and Virginia Mae Young Howard.  He served in the United States Navy in the North Atlantic during World War II, and was a retired Weighmaster and Clerk for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad and CSX Transportation for 45 years.  He was a member and past deacon of the Advent Christian denomination where he also served as a teacher for many years. He enjoyed hunting, ocean fishing, and carpentry. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great-great grandfather.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, four sisters, a brother.He is survived by his wife, Alice May Taylor Howard of Clifton Forge; three daughters, Alice Carroll and husband Kenny of Clifton Forge, Linda Walton and husband Dickie of Clifton Forge, and Brenda Simpson and husband Charles “Butch’ Simpson of Roanoke; one son, Robert George “Robbie” Howard III and wife Heather of Covington; two brothers-in-law, Tom O’ Meara and Gary Warlitner, both of Clifton Forge; nine grandchildren, Kacy Carroll and wife Liza, Steven Carroll and wife Gina Adrales, Rickie Walton and wife Lesa, Cristy Cahoon and fiancé Mike Sheppard, Tiffany Johnson and husband Jeffrey, B. J. Simpson and wife Teri, Josh Howard and partner Elizabeth Catte, Matt Howard and wife Laura Brana, and Zack Puckett and wife Connie; ten great grandchildren, Zach Carroll, Chelsie Cahoon, Jordan Carroll, Cortnie Walton, Maegan Herwald and husband Hunter, Patrick Cahoon, Cristen Walton, Bryce Carroll, Rowan Puckett, and Clark Johnson; three great-great-grandchildren, Daisy Walton, Lucas Herwald, and Parker Walton; special neighbors, Susan and Jeremy Curtis; special friend, Tracy Morris; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other treasured friends.The family would like to thank the entire team at Mountain Regional Hospice.In keeping with his wishes, his body has been cremated. A memorial service will be scheduled for a later date.  The family will receive friends in the coming days at 3317 Longdale Station Road, Clifton Forge.Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge is handling arrangements.To send condolences to the family online, please visit www.nicelyfuneralhome.com.
