ROANOKE, Va. (VR) –  The Alleghany Varsity Girls Soccer Team may have come up short in a 2-1 loss on Friday, but the team’s performance on the field showcased resilience and marked improvement in both skill and teamwork. Despite dealing with a number of injuries and illnesses, the team fought tirelessly against a tough opponent and continued to show the growth they’ve been working toward all season.

Allie Taylor was the star of the game for Alleghany, scoring the team’s lone goal with a direct kick that found the back of the net. Taylor’s ability to handle pressure in critical moments is a testament to her skill, and she was also instrumental on the defensive side, recording 2 blocks and 13 steals. Her all-around performance helped to keep her team in the game and provided a much-needed spark when it was most needed.

The defense was a standout area for Alleghany, with several players contributing in big ways. Chloe Franson tallied 12 steals, while Jordyn Bradshaw was exceptional with 19 steals, constantly disrupting the opponent’s attack. Eliza Unroe added 11 steals, Lilly Catron contributed 17, and Taylor Staton matched that with 17 steals as well. Kimora Moye and Emma Seldomridge were also strong contributors, registering 11 and 16 steals, respectively, and Abby Elmore rounded out the effort with 11 steals. Collectively, the team amassed an impressive total of 24 steals from various players, underscoring their solid defensive effort.

Gracie Stull was stellar in goal, making 12 saves to keep the team in contention despite the pressure. Her quick reflexes and leadership in the net were crucial, providing the team with the opportunity to fight for an equalizer throughout the match.

The Lady Cougars will battle James River at home on Monday at the Jackson River Sports Complex at 6:00.
