Sue L. Jones

Mary Sue Ludington Jones, 85 a resident of the Bridgewater Retirement Community since June 2015 passed away there on February 13, 2025.

She was born on June 21, 1939, at Callaghan, Alleghany County, VA the daughter of the late Thurmond R. “Tom” Ludington and Minnie G. Chisholm Ludington both of Greenbrier County, WV. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Rev. Samuel P. Jones, Jr., a native of Richmond, VA.

Sue graduated from Covington VA High School in 1956 and from Westhampton College (University of Richmond, VA) in 1960 with a major in Psychology. She was active in the University Choir, Baptist Student Union, Archery Team and Psychology Club, serving as president her senior year.

She met her husband in 1960 at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY where she was doing graduate study in Religious Education. They were married on November 25, 1961 at Trinity Baptist Church in Covington. She assisted her husband, “Pastor Sam” through 53 years of
pastoral ministry (four full-time churches and four more part-time churches after his retirement) in the areas of organist, pianist, choir member, church secretary, missions and other areas of church work as needed, including Chair of the year-long celebration of the 150 th Anniversary of Warrenton Baptist Church.

Her employment outside the church included Secretary to Secondary Supervisors, Hampton, VA School Board; Grant typist and Special Education Department Secretary, James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA; Secretary/Bookkeeper of Moser Funeral Home and Bright View Cemetery,
Warrenton, VA; and nine years of part-time clerical assistance in the Harrisonburg Baptist Church Office and Music Department after she and her husband moved back to the Shenandoah Valley in August 2005.

Harrisonburg community activities included President, County Mothers Cooperative Kindergarten, 1975; Board of Directors, Augusta Baptist Association Migrant Bible School; Board of Directors, Belmont Estates Civic Association, and PTA volunteer. After moving to Warrenton, Sue was a Volunteer Mom, Taylor Junior High School, assisting the school librarian, and Program Chairman on Taylor’s Parent Advisory Council.

She is survived by her two children, Jeffrey Alan Jones of Vernon, VT and Susan Michelle Payne of Weyers Cave, VA; and her sister-in-law, Helen O. Jones, Richmond, VA.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, Feb. 22 from 9:30 AM until the funeral service begins at 10:30 AM at Harrisonburg Baptist Church. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.

Graveside service will follow at 3:00 PM at Beahm’s Chapel Cemetery, Luray, VA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to BRC Foundation Endowment Fund, Bridgewater, VA 22812; Hahn Cancer Center, Sentara RMH, Harrisonburg, VA 22801 or Mercy House, Harrisonburg, VA 22802.
