COVINGTON, Va. (VR) - The Covington Lumberjacks will welcome Special Olympics athletes to Casey Field on Sunday, June 14, for a memorable evening of baseball and community spirit.
The festivities begin at 4 p.m. as Special Olympics participants take part in several pregame activities. Athletes will sing the National Anthem, join Lumberjacks players on the field during introductions, and have the opportunity to throw a ceremonial first pitch.
The event is designed to celebrate inclusion and provide a special experience for participating athletes while bringing the community together through baseball. Fans are encouraged to arrive early and help recognize the Special Olympics athletes as they take center stage alongside the Lumberjacks.

Nicely, Peters victorious at Salem YMCA

SALEM – Alleghany took part in a swim meet with Carroll County, Franklin County, Glenvar, and Salem at the Salem YMCA on Tuesday, January 17th where they had two individual swim victories. 
 
Representing Alleghany, Kara Nicely and Emily Peters, each had victories for the Cougars. Peters won the 100-yard backstroke following a time of 1:23.16. Meanwhile Nicely took first in the 100-yard butterfly after beating out the competition with a 1:13.47 time.
 
Including the two individual girls wins, Alleghany’s girls’ team had five total top 5 finishes.
 
Nicely and Peters, both found the top 5 in other events. Nicely took second in the 50-yard freestyle following a time of 30.98, while Peters finished just behind Nicely in the 50-yard freestyle with a fourth-place time of 33.96.
 
Katie Stull was another Cougars swimmer in the top 5 after securing a time of 1:35.82 in the 100-yard breaststroke.
 
The girls 200-yard medley relay team (Nicely, Peters, Stull, and Cora Hodges) took second place with a time of 2:31.44. The 200-yard freestyle relay team (Nicely, Peters, Stull, and Payton O’Brien) also took second place after they swam a time of 2:20.20.
 
For the boys swim team, James Conner finished individually best with an eighth-place result in the 100-yard backstroke following a time of 1:42.87.
 
The boys 200-yard freestyle relay team featuring Conner, Cadence Bland, Nolan Rosales, and Isaiah Thomas, took third with a time of 2:37.09.
 
The overall race itself belonged to Glenvar who swept all four opponents and events in both the boys’ and girls’ competition.

Special Olympics Night With The Jacks

The Covington Lumberjacks Bark in the Park night has been rescheduled for June 16 at 6:30 p.m. after the original game was cancelled due to weather. Fans are encouraged to bring donations of dog and cat food for the Alleghany Humane Society, which will also be on hand with adoptable pets. Guests are welcome to bring their four-legged friends as long as they are on a leash.
