Dear editor. My name is Jeff Irvine and I currently serve as mayor for the Town of Clifton Forge. I am also seeking re-election to the town council on November the fifth. I felt compelled to write this letter as a way of saying thank you, not only to my supporters, but to all of the citizens of our great little town.

It also affords me the opportunity to clarify my position on some key issues and to list a few of the accomplishments I have played a part in. Finally, it gives me a chance to explain why it would best benefit the town to vote for me in the upcoming election.

As for experience, I have served our town on the council for 13 years. Five years of my tenure has been as Mayor. Although titular, this position has presented a unique opportunity to nurture good relations with our surrounding communities. Of course, as mayor, accolades can be very limited or occasional.  Blame, on the other hand, seems to be limitless. Still, I enjoy it immensely.

My dedication remains as enthusiastic as my first day in office 13 years ago. Over the years, I have missed no more than three council meetings in total. The true litmus test of any elected official is remaining true to their words over the years. I have!

Accessibility is another component of effective leadership. I answer every call and visit every person who wishes to discuss whatever problem they may have. God willing, I’ll still be around in ten years and still living in this town that I love. I want to be remembered as a person who truly cared for the people.

I’m no quitter. If you honor me with your vote, I’ll stay the course. Consistency, in my opinion, is another important aspect of government on any level. Being consistent does not mean resistance to change by any means. I think it is more in line with an elected official consistently making decisions that are in line with their campaign promises, not decisions based upon their personal gain or agenda.

I love this town, and I hope the faith of the people who live here have a glorious future for the good of all in Clifton Forge.

God bless, Jeff Irvine.

Juneteenth Celebration Brings Community Together

June 22, 2026
COVINGTON, Va. (VR) -  The Covington VA250 Carnival wrapped up Saturday night with a boom — literally — as a spectacular fireworks display brought the three-day celebration to a close.
The event drew strong crowds throughout the weekend, with Saturday night attracting the largest attendance. Families and visitors filled the carnival grounds, enjoying rides, games, food vendors, and live entertainment. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, screams from thrill-seekers, and the aroma of classic carnival favorites.
The event was well received across the Alleghany Highlands, with many attendees suggesting it should become an annual tradition.
Saturday night's entertainment featured REO Survivor and Co., who delivered a high-energy performance at the amphitheater that kept music fans entertained throughout the evening.
The celebration concluded with a fireworks show that lasted nearly 20 minutes, lighting up the night sky and providing a memorable ending to the weekend festivities.
Covington Parks and Recreation Director Lisa Worley thanked the many volunteers, sponsors, organizations, and community members who helped make the event possible.
It had been a very long time since the Alleghany Highlands hosted an event of this size and scope. Thanks to the efforts of Worley and countless others behind the scenes, the VA250 Carnival proved to be a successful celebration and a fitting tribute as America approaches its 250th birthday.
