Cougars Stay Third in Latest VHSL Football Rankings

The latest official VHSL high school football rankings was released on Monday where there was little change to the top 8.

One of the changes in the top 8 were Wilson Memorial and Broadway flip flopping as the Green Hornets moved back into the playoff field as the 7th-seed, while the Gobblers are now currently on the outside looking in.

The only other change to the top 8 was East Rockingham dropping from 7th to 8th after they were blown out at home to Spotswood last Friday night 45-0. The Eagles were held to -21 yards of total offense, the lowest of any school in region 3C this season.

Alleghany remained in the third spot once again.

The Cougars best chance at moving up is to the 2nd-seed. The way AHS could do so is by getting help from Turner Ashby losing one of their final four games of the season, which I do not foresee happening unless they were to stumble to Spotswood during the final week of the season.

If that were the scenario where both the Cougars and Knights were unbeaten going into the final week of the season, then AHS fans need to be cheering on the Blazers as the Cougars would move into the second seed where they would have at least two home playoff games instead of one as the 3-seed.

Where things stand right now if the season ended today, Alleghany would host Staunton.

As have mentioned in the past few weeks, all the playing out scenarios are fun to do, but there is still a ton of football left to be played this season. Alleghany has a big game this week that could determine the Three Rivers District champion and a loss for the Cougars could drop the team to the 4th or even 5th-seed.

Another key game this week in the region features the current 4th and 5th-seeds as Heritage-Lynchburg hosts Rustburg. Either one of those teams could leap into the top 3 after this weekend.

The rollercoaster that is the regional rankings will continue for weeks to come. When one team loses, the dominoes drop and others move up and down. Keep that seat buckled, we’re still for a wild finish come the final week of the regular season.
