LOW MOOR – Last season Alleghany roared past Glenvar to a 27-10 victory in Salem.
That Cougars team was led by Purcel Turner who scored all four touchdowns for AHS in the win over the Highlanders, including an 80-yd kick return.
This time with a lot higher stakes involved.
Both Alleghany and Glenvar enter their Three Rivers District contest undefeated at 6-0.
Both teams have defeated the reigning Class 2 State Champion Radford Bobcats.
Whoever wins puts themselves in the driver’s seat towards a district title this season.
The stakes are just a little bit higher for Alleghany.
A little over two Fridays ago the Cougars made a statement with their district win over Radford as they held the Bobcats to their second lowest scoring game of the season with only nine.
Meanwhile, last week, coming off of their bye week, Alleghany took care of another district opponent in Carroll County winning in Hillsville 27-8. The Cavaliers had entered that game at 5-1 with their only loss coming in non-district play against George Wythe.
This week Alleghany has a chance to not only put themselves in prime position for a district title following wins over Radford, Carroll County and potentially Glenvar, but the Cougars could also cement themselves as top 3 seed in the Class 3, Region C playoff tournament.
Following this week’s game with Glenvar, Alleghany’s remaining schedule is at Patrick County, home versus James River (Buchanan), and on the road against Floyd County. All games in which the Cougars should win.
Not looking ahead too much, but should Alleghany get past Glenvar, they most likely will finish the regular season undefeated at 10-0.
The Cougars have already made their statement that they belong with the juggernauts of the district, but also the schools in their region.
A win over Glenvar just further pushes that narrative that they are a team not to be taken lightly.
Last year it was Turner who put the driving forces behind a 17-point win over the Highlanders. This year the Cougars offense might be even scarier when facing GHS.
Led by plethora of offensive speed, skill, agility, and the whole nine yards, Alleghany led by the man under center, Des Jordan, has all the makings of another top-tier victory come Friday night.
Jordan has done an outstanding job this season utilizing his sources around him, from Carter Nicely and Gavin Via in the backfield, to Xzavier Hayslett, Sarge Persinger, and company as his receivers. The Cougars offense is explosive and will be tough to stop.
While the junior quarterback did throw his first two interceptions of the season last week against Carroll County, Jordan finished with over 200-yds passing and a pair of touchdowns.
Not to mention a defense that is holding opponents to under 12 points per game.
Glenvar’s fewest points scored in a game this season, 34, came against Galax in their season opener.
However, the Highlanders defense is their juggernaut as they are only giving up just over 4-points a game. GHS has only allowed 27 total points in their six games. The most points they have given up this season is eight points to Liberty and 12 to Radford.
The talk was Alleghany-Radford from three weeks ago being such a huge game and having such importance. Then Glenvar knocked off the Bobcats a week ago.
