LOW MOOR – Alleghany bounced back in a big way on Thursday with a straight-set Three Rivers District home victory over James River as they won the sets 25-21, 25-20, 25-14.

After dropping their district opener on the road to Carroll County in four-sets just days before, the Cougars defended their home court on their way to picking up their first TRD win of the season.

Senior Kaiya Lian led the way for Alleghany in their first district win with a team-high 14 kills and 11 digs. Meanwhile senior Bryce Leitch led the team in digs with 12, while adding seven kills, and three aces. Senior Laken Tingler added eight kills, while sophomore Kendra Dressler piled up 32 assists for the winning Cougars.

With the win Alleghany improved to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in district play. On Tuesday the Cougars return to the court with a TRD road contest against Radford.

In the earlier contest of the evening, Alleghany’s JV team defeated James River’s JV team in two-sets winning 25-14, 25-21. Following the Cougars JV team victory over the Knights, AHS improved to 6-1 overall and remained unbeaten in district play at 2-0.

This past weekend on Saturday, Alleghany’s JV team participated in a JV tournament at James River High School where they finished in second place with an overall record of 3-2 at the tournament.

During the pool-play the Cougars went 2-1 with wins over E.C. Glass and Parry McCluer, while their one loss came against Appomattox.

In the semifinals Alleghany defeated Salem in two-sets winning 25-23 and 25-18 but lost in the championship match to Franklin County in two-sets falling 25-21, 25-18.

Alleghany’s JV team now stands 9-3 overall on the season and remains undefeated in district play at 2-0. The Cougars will play at Radford in their next match on Tuesday prior to the varsity contest.
