BLACKSBURG – At the Blacksburg Relays held at Blacksburg High School, it was Kiera Lowman, the number one ranked runner in Virginia, who ran the fastest among all the runners in the girls 2,000-meter split, helping Alleghany to a fourth-place finish.

Lowman, who finished with a time of 7:13.1, was joined by Faith Barron, Maggie Hensley, Hannah Hipes, and Charlotte Taylor. The group finished with a 10k time of 40:35.9.

Meanwhile the boys sent out two teams to represent the Cougars. It was their group A team of Maddox Wickline, James Ross, Evan Bishop, Nick Powell, and Miles Christian that finished 12th overall with a time of 35:48.2. Wickline finished with the fastest boys’ time among AHS runners with a time of 6:36.30, which ranked him 27th overall.

Blacksburg High School, who sent out six girls’ teams, had their group A team finish in first place with a time of 38:56.80, including Reilly Thomas, who finished with the third fastest individual time. BHS had three of their teams in the top 5.

Blacksburg was also tops in the boy’s event. BHS sent out 11 boys’ teams with their group A placing first with a time of 31:13.60. Just like how Thomas finished with the third fastest girls time, it was Ryan Bagchi representing BHS with the third fastest boys’ time. William Zealand from Pacers Homeschool was the fastest boy’s runner at 6:01.70.

It wasn’t your usual cross-country event. The coaches from each school put together five runners on each relay team (if they had enough for multiple teams) and with the combined time of the splits among the runners determined the placing of each.
