FISHERSVILLE – Down, but not out.
Alleghany overcame an 0-2 set deficit to win a thriller in a decisive fifth set, winning 25-27, 24-26, 25-14. 25-15, 15-13 last Monday on the road in a non-district volleyball contest over Wilson Memorial in Fishersville.
It was a late marathon that saw the match go past 10:00 p.m.
With the score locked in 13-13 in the fifth and final set, Kaiya Lian ended the game with back-to-back kills. Lian led the Cougars with 25 kills, 13 digs, and seven aces. Kendra Dressler had a big performance with 49 assists.
Elisabeth Irving, a freshman for Wilson Memorial, played a pivotal role for the Green Hornets. Irving, a defensive specialist, accounted for a team-high 22 digs. Outside hitter Katie Lawhorn contributed with 15 kills for Wilson.
The Green Hornets had the Cougars in the fifth set winning 12-10 before AHS scored five of the next six points to win the game.
