April 1999 – Two Alleghany High School students participated in the BETA Club state convention, held March 26-28 in Roanoke. Jennifer Nicholson, a junior, won second place in the arts and crafts category for making a prom dress. Zach Downey, also a junior, won first place in the arts and crafts category for making a wire sculpture. Nicholson and Downey are now eligible for national competition, to be held in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in June. AHS sent 23 students to the state convention. (Gavin Dressler Photo)
