MGCC falls on the road to Northern VA CC
Northern Virginia Community College escaped with a slim 89-87 home victory against Mountain Gateway Community College on January 17th.
The Nighthawks were led by Corey Caulker and Courtney Davis who combined for 57 points in the win over the Roadrunners. Caulker scored a game-high 33 points, while Davis had 24. Manuel Coronado added 11.
In the loss MGCC had four players reach double digits. Dontrell Smith scored a team-high 22 points, while Athony Harris dropped in 19. Off of the bench Brandon Pritchett scored 13 points and Wanquavious Butler added 10.
The loss dropped the Roadrunners to 9-8 overall.

Roadrunners give up season-high 135 points in loss.
SOUTHERN PINES, NC – In a crucial Region 10 conference matchup on Saturday, January 20th, Sandhills Community College defeated Mountain Gateway Community College 135-100 at home in Southern Pines, NC.
Jamori McDougald poured in 30 points for the Flyers who put together a big first half in which the team scored 62 points and took a 24-point lead into the second half. McDougald capped off the first half with a half court buzzer beater.
The second half was more of the same from Sandhills (14-7) as the team continued to score at will as they scored 73 points en route to their 35-point win over Mountain Gateway. McDougald finished with a double-double, 30 points and 10 assists, along with eight made 3-pointers.
Damien Robinson also had a double-double for the Flyers as he scored 12 points and reeled in 13 rebounds. SHCC knocked down a season-high 18 3-pointers and shot 56% from the field. Off of the bench Chad Kinch added 21 points.
Mountain Gateway (9-9) had four players in double figures scoring. Dontrell Smith led the way for the Roadrunners with 26 points, while Anthony Harrison added 18. Off of the bench Dae Dae Bowens scored 15 points, while Brandon Pritchett chipped in with 11.
The Roadrunners scored 62 points in the second half.
Sandhills swept the regular season series with Mountain Gateway. The Flyers were 103-88 winners over the Roadrunners in Clifton Forge back on December 16th.
The 35-point loss was Mountain Gateway’s biggest margin of defeat this season and was the most points they have given up.

Smith scores 54 in record setting Roadrunners win.
CLIFTON FORGE – It was a record night for Dontrell Smith in Mountain Gateway’s 117-62 home victory over Appalachian Bible College on Tuesday, January 23rd in Clifton Forge.
Smith broke the school-record with a 53-point performance in the Roadrunners 10th win of the season. Smith knocked down eight 3-pointers.
The 117 points was the third most points Mountain Gateway (10-9) has scored in a game this season.
While the night belonged to Smith who set a program record, Anthony Harrison also had a huge night for Mountain Gateway as he dropped 42 points on Appalachian. Harrison was one of three Roadrunners who finished with a double-double. Along with his 42 points, Harrison also reeled in 18 rebounds.
Brandon Pritchett, who got the start scored six points, but put together a double-double with 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Meanwhile, Jaden Rice also had a double-double with 14 rebounds and 12 assists.
The Roadrunners shot 50% from the field and assisted on 31 of the teams 47 made field goals.
Mountain Gateway swept their regular season series with Appalachian. The Roadrunners defeated the Warriors in Mount Hope, W.Va. 119-36 back in November.

Jaguars upset Roadrunners.
SMITHFIELD. NC – On Thursday, January 25th, Johnston Community College pulled off a 90-87 home victory over Mountain Gateway in Smithfield, NC.
The loss was the Roadrunners (10-10) fifth in their last six games.
Four of the Panthers five starters scored in double figures in the win over the Roadrunners.
Jaidyn Dunn scored a team-high 21 points, while Ellija Preddy had 20, and Regquan Kaazim-Johnson & Michael Linton each added 14. Kaazim-Johnson contributed with a double-double, 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Mountain Gateway only dressed seven players. The Roadrunners had four players reaching double digits. Anthony Harrison following his 42-point performance last time out, scored a game-high 27 in the loss. Meanwhile, Brandon Pritchett and Jaden Rice each had 17. Off of the bench Conye Davis added 16.
