On Valentine’s evening, February 14, the Alleghany Highlands Arts Council will present “Close To You: Music of the Carpenters” at the Historic Masonic Theatre at 7:00 pm in the John Hillert Auditorium.
ConMusicsidered one of the best vocalists of all time, Karen Carpenter captured the hearts of a generation of music lovers. Singer and playwright Lisa Rock has compiled an extraordinary tribute to the music and life of Miss Carpenter and brings it to the stage along with her 6-piece band.
Dedicated to re-creating The Carpenters’ authentic sound, Ms. Rock and her band showcase some of the most memorable songs of the 1970s, including “We’ve Only Just Begun,” “Rainy Days and Mondays,” “Top of the World,” and, of course, “Close to You.”
“What a fabulous Valentine’s date!” said Arts Council Executive Director Tammy Scruggs-Duncan, “The music holds a nostalgia and romance that will impress your sweetheart and make the evening extra special.”
The performance had been scheduled in the Tom Dean Underground, but swift ticket sales soon left that venue filled, so the Arts Council moved the event upstairs to the main stage to allow a larger seating capacity.
Tickets for general admission are $20 and can be purchased through the Masonic’s box office site historicmasonictheatre.
While in the Alleghany Highlands, Lisa Rock and her band will also conduct master classes at Alleghany High School as part of the Lighthouse Project, a partnership between the Arts Council, Alleghany Highlands Community Services Board, and the Alleghany Highlands Public School. A grant from the Alleghany Foundation underwrites the entire residency. Additional funding is provided by the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
