MONTEREY – The Highland Rams controlled the final two minutes of their basketball game on Friday, December 15th for a 59-48 Pioneer District victory over Bath County.
After a tightly contested basketball game throughout the first three quarters and the better part of the fourth, the Rams set the pace late in the final period as they held the Chargers to three points and outscored them 12-3.
Bath County fell behind early 12-4 and put together a big second quarter to keep pace with Highland as the team trailed 24-19 at the end of the first half.
The Chargers leading scorer Luke Turner scored a team-high 14 points in the loss, with 10 of them coming in the third period as BCHS cut the deficit down to just one point at 37-36.
Free throws in the final period proved to be a game changer for Highland as they knocked down all eight of their attempts in the closing minutes of a two-point game where the Rams held a close 47-45 lead before holding Bath County to just those three minutes in the game’s final minutes.
Issac Ingram was the only other Charger in double figures as he scored 10 points.
Meanwhile, the Rams were led by John Wagner who scored a game-high 20 points, while Eli Moore dropped in 16, and Zach Armstrong added 12.
The loss dropped Bath County to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in district play, while Highland moved to 3-2 and 2-0 in district play.
