When it comes to athleticism, the Alleghany Cougars have it in spades! From boys’ football to girls’ cross-country, the newly created school now houses several athletes who continue to dominate their sport of choice.
Recently, the website Milestat.com —Virginia’s go-to website for up-to-date news on high school track and cross-country— named Alleghany High School’s own Kiera Lowman the number 63 fastest female in Virginia Cross Country (XC) history. “This is from the beginning of tracking history and hundreds of thousands of girls,” said Varsity Girls Cross Country Head Coach Jeremy Bartley in a recent Facebook post. “To see the girls she is sharing company with is incredible.”
Lowman made strides all season, breaking record after record, including her own. The Varsity Lady Cougar Cross Country Team made it all the way to state this year, placing fifth. In the same race, Lowman took home the first-place victory, clenching her second state title in a row.
Meanwhile, several Alleghany High School football players made all-district this year to no surprise by fans. These included Caleb Walden, Nate Chapman, Xzavier Hayslett, Purcel Turner, Gavin Via, Hayden Knighton, Hunter Knighton, Nate Phillips, Neeko Jeter, Hunter Depriest, Andrew Cole, and Des Jordan. See the full all-district list for a complete rundown.
All season long, the Alleghany Cougars football team dominated the field, going 9-1 in their regular season and making it all the way to the first round of playoffs. They would fall just short, succumbing to the Rustburg Red Devils in a tough 40-29 loss and ending with an overall record of 9-2.
Despite the loss, the Alleghany Cougar football team did what no one else had been able to do. They brought hundreds of fans together —half of them were former Alleghany Mountaineer fans and the other half were former Covington Cougar fans— and they threw them in the stands together, sitting side-by-side, all rooting for the same team. Go Cougars!
