SALEM – Not since 1942 has Roanoke College had a football program.
That is all coming to a change as the school is rebuilding their program.
The school’s first step; finding a head coach.
On Monday, November 20th, at a press conference at RC, Bryan Stinespring was introduced as the school’s first head football coach after an 80-plus year hiatus.
The Clifton Forge native was most recently the associate head football coach offensive assistant at Virginia Military Institute.
Prior to that, Stinespring was the AD at Alleghany High School prior to the school merger with Covington.
Stinespring brings over 30-years of coaching experience to Roanoke College.
Most notably, Stinespring, coached at Virginia Tech for 26 years (1993-2015) under Frank Beamer, where they went to one National Championship Games and eight BCS bowl games.
Other coaching stints where Stinespring has been a part of includes James Madison University, University of Delaware, Old Dominion University, and the University of Maryland.
Roanoke College disbanded the football program back in 1942 because of constraints of World War II.
This past summer the college raised $1.3 million to help support to the return of the football program, a cheerleading team, and a marching band program.
