COVINGTON – The Covington Lumberjacks (10-8) were just three outs away from their sixth straight win before the Charlottesville TomSox rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth inning to pick up a 10-9 victory on the first day of July.
Ahead 9-7, Covington was closing in on the way they ended the month of June, victorious. Derek Williams however shifted momentum to the visiting TomSox as he crushed a 3-2 pitch over the fence to open the top of the ninth inning.
Two batters later, Kalvin Alexander hit a game-tying RBI single for the TomSox. Once again two batters later and still no outs, Kyle Edwards would bring Alexander home to score on a go-ahead RBI single which gave the team a one run lead at 10-9.
In the home half of the ninth inning, Covington put on the first two batters. However, David Bell, Gabriel Miranda, and Christopher Watson were held in check by Jeremy Goins who closed the door on Charlottesville victory.
Both teams exploded for a combined 25 hits and 19 runs scored.
Covington had four batters in their lineup with a multi-hit game including Michael Pavelchak, Logan Braunschweig, Gregory Melo, and Christopher Watson, who was playing in just his second game of the season. Melo and Chenar Brown both led the Lumberjacks with a pair of RBIs.
The Lumberjacks had trailed 7-4 entering the bottom of the seventh inning before retaking the lead at 8-7. Brown had the biggest hit of the inning coming on a pinch-hit two-run double which had tied the game. Bell would put the Jacks’ ahead with an RBI double one batter later.
Braden Halladay was the winner for Charlottesville. As the third pitcher of the game for the TomSox, Halladay was nearly the most effective as he did not give up a run in 1.1 shutout innings.
Alexander Linas suffered the loss for Covington as he lasted 1.2 innings where he allowed two runs, three hits, one walk, and struck out three.
