Dawn Yox, the owner and operator of “Shear Independence,” is saying goodbye after serving the town of Clifton Forge for the past 8 years. The talented hairdresser and nail tech sat down to talk about what led to opening her business, and what has driven her to close it down.
Yox began apprenticing around 2011, obtaining her cosmetology degree after a year and a half. She then moved on to work at “Smart Styles” for three years. Then on September 14, 2015, her dream of running her own salon came true when she opened the doors to “Shear Independence” at 534 Main Street in the town of Clifton Forge.
“I do love working,” Yox said. “I love the creativity. It’s the whole reason I got into this. So, you can do something different every day; you can meet different people, get to know different things. I’m always curious… I wanted this place to feel comfortable, like you’re at home, that you could be relaxed and talk to somebody.”
Despite her love for her job and customers, Dawn Yox says that after 12 years of steady working, there is one thing she loves more. The mother-of-four smiled and said, “I want to rededicate myself to my family.” As such, she has chosen to close the doors of her multi-station salon.
Mrs. Yox has opted to sell her business and most of the contents inside for the bargain price of $15,000. This includes all six stations, one of which is a nail station she says would be perfect for any nail tech, all the furnishings minus her decorations, chemicals, cleaning equipment, two color lines, and all the books that go with the color lines.
Buyers would need a business license through the town of Clifton Forge, a business license through the DPOR (Department of Professional Occupational Relations), and —though not required— should seek insurance. The new buyer could work off Yox’s salon license until it expires on September 30 but will need to go through the DPOR to obtain their own.
It is Yox’s goal to sell the business prior to her last day as a favor to her landlord. “I want to get somebody in here for my landlord because he’s the best. His name is Scott Showalter and he’s always done everything he can for me.” According to Yox, Showalter has proven himself reliable, taking care of issues “that day or the day after.”
There is still time to set up an appointment with Dawn Yox, and she continues to accept walk-ins for her business that will remain open until September 30. Yox can be reached on her cell phone at 540-958-4925 or at her store number at 540-862-4554, though, she says, it is always best to try her cell phone first.
