Thomas Smals was named as Director of Parks and Recreation when city employees were recognized at the city of Covington’s regular meeting, last Tuesday evening.
Allen Dressler, City Manager recognized Public Works employees: Anthony Lowry, Deputy of Administration; Lonnie Givens for his over 40 years of service; and Bob Howard, Deputy of Operations.
He also recognized Mike Mines, who was originally hired as Maintenance Technician as Building Official, Zoning Administrator, and Head of Facility Maintenance; Gisela Roldan, formerly of the Meet and Greet Citizen’s Service Department was hired as Mines’ Administrative Assistant; Tony Smallwood, retired from the Police Department, was hired as Code Enforcer; and Teri McClung was hired as Small Business Coordinator.
Dressler also recognized Police Chief Chris Smith, Lt. Juan Roldan, and the entire Police Department for the work they do and their effective communications.
During his city report to Council, Dressler gave a shout-out to Patrick Madigan and the city of Lexington for helping with cameras since the city of Covington’s camera van was struck by lightning last summer. He also reported that McClung had located a contact in hopes of finding out the plans for the vacant Applebee’s property as the city prepares to market an adjacent property.
In addition, Dressler reported that the Office of Drinking Water had visited the Water Treatment Plant and made some recommendations and expressed some concerns. He advised Council that the Plant is working to address these recommendations and concerns because “our citizens deserve and expect, as we all do, good, quality drinking water in our community,” said Dressler.
Council approved appointments to various boards as follows: Tambria (Tammy) Scruggs-Duncan was reappointed to Economic Development Corporation; Kathy Cucci was appointed to the Economic Development Corporation; and, Mayor Thomas Sibold, Jr. to the TAP Board of Directors. Katherine (Kathy) Lytle, Robert K. Bennett, II, and Richard W. Fuhrman were appointed to the Board of Equalization per the request of Cathy Kimberlin, Commissioner of Revenue. Council approved a salary of $15 an hour for those appointed to the Board of Equalization.
In other action, Council approved the minutes from the May 2nd work session, the May 9th regular meeting, and the May 16th called meeting and various resolutions and ordinances.
