Dr. Matt McGraw, Associate Vice President at Mountain Gateway Community College, recently returned from a two-week trip to Taiwan as part of the Fulbright US-Taiwan International Education Administrators (IEA) program. “IEA awards afford US educators the opportunity to widen their perspective, engage in cross-cultural exchange, and take the first step in collaborating with institutions around the world,” explained Dr. McGraw. “I joined administrators from 25 American universities as we attended meetings at a variety of institutions and universities all across Taiwan. We explored their education system, opportunities for future collaboration, and the importance of cultural exchange as well as Taiwanese history, culture, and current socio-political environment.” McGraw said the group visited a dozen universities and multiple agencies, such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Foundation for International Cooperation in Higher Education, and participated in several cultural immersion experiences. “We visited the cities of Taipei, Taichung, Nantou, Tainan, and Kaohsiung,” he added. “Our schedule was packed with informative seminars, information sharing, great food, and new friends.” Just before McGraw left for the Fulbright trip, he was recognized as MGCC’s Educator of the Year during the annual meeting of the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, held at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, WV.
