CLIFTON FORGE, Va. (VR) – Once again, the Clifton Forge Corridor Curb Appeal Committee is inviting all volunteers to help clean up the town on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, from 9-11 a.m. Please, meet at Town Hall to receive assignments, orange trash bags and safety vests. Volunteers are asked to bring work gloves and trash picker grabbers if they have them. Town Hall will provide a place to deposit the filled trash bags.
The winter has left much trash and debris in the town entrance corridors and on the main streets. A good number of volunteers will help to make the task at hand much simpler. The Corridor Curb Appeal Committee thanks regional volunteers, Boy Scout Troop 2 and Virginia Boys Home, for helping out at every Spring Spruce Up.
This year, founders of the nonprofit organization called Fishing for Plastic will be joining the Corridor Curb Appeal effort. Learn more about their mission by visiting their website, fishingforplastic.com. The founders will be visiting the area for several days on their way back to Canada after spending the last two months cleaning up ocean plastic waste that collects on the shores of the Abacos Islands because of the flow of the Gulf Stream.
They spend another part of the year joining forces with other plastic waste cleanup organizations working on the west coast of Canada in the Vancouver area. In the past year they have introduced school children to some recently created machines that can convert plastic waste into usable items. They have asked to join in this spring cleanup effort, because of the realization that ocean plastic waste often starts in rivers inland in Virginia and elsewhere. They have had a few T-shirts made to offer as prizes on April 22.
Please, spread the word about the need for volunteers and plan to meet at Town Hall, as the volunteers work together to clean the town. Those who can’t meet, are asked to plan to work with their neighbors, churches and other organizations to clean their individual sections of the community.
