LOW MOOR, Va. (VR) – One more chapter has closed in the Alleghany-Covington High School sports rivalry.

For the 75th and final time, the two schools met on the baseball diamond on Thursday in Low Moor.

The Mounties (7-0) were victorious over the Cougars (2-6) 17-3 in a game that ended after four-1/2 innings due to VHSL mercy rules. The win gave the Mountaineers an all-time final winning record over the Cougars at 66-9.

The day belonged to Conner McPeek (3-for-5) and Hunter Nicely (2-for-3). McPeek put together a three-hit, four-RBI performance, including a three-run home run which was part of a 10-run second inning for the Mountaineers, which essentially had put the game away, as the team had taken a 16-2 lead after two innings. McPeek, out of the bullpen, also pitched two scoreless innings where he struck out four batters. Nicely also had four RBIs, which happened on two two-run singles.

Along with McPeek, Anthony Webb (W/3-for-3), and Garrett Via (3-for-3) also had three-hit days at the plate, while Webb added three RBIs. Wyatt Griffith (2-for-2), and Eli Weese (1-for-3) each had two RBIs. Webb picked up the win after just one inning of work, where he allowed two earned runs on three hits, one walk and struck out two. Tyler Jackson (1-for-1) relieved Webb after the first inning and gave up one earned run in two innings but did strike out four.

It was the fifth time in seven games that the Mountaineers have scored 10 or more runs in a game this season.

The Cougars had jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning. Hayden Rodgers (2-for-3) and Luke Conner (2-for-3) led the team with two hits each. Ethan Martin (1-for-2) had the team’s lone RBI in the game, which came during the first inning and had put the team up two runs at the time. Dylan Williams (L/0-for-1) suffered the loss after allowing 16 runs on 14 hits, four walks and struck out a batter. Rodgers pitched two innings in relief of Williams and allowed just one run on one hit, while walking five, and struck out four.

This was not the last time the two schools will play against each other in sports. That final showdown will take place on April 27 in both soccer and softball at the Jackson River Sports Complex.

The Mountaineers swept the Cougars in the two games they played against each other. The Mountaineers won 22-0 in their first meeting back on March 13. Webb finished 7-for-7 in the two games as well as the most RBIs with seven and had one win. McPeek had the lone home run in the two games. Rodgers led the Cougars with three hits (3-for-6) during the two games, while Martin accounted for both of the team’s RBIs they had.

The Mountaineers are off until next Friday, when they travel to Floyd to take on the Buffaloes in a Three Rivers district matchup. Meanwhile, the Cougars returned to Casey Field on Tuesday as they hosted the Eastern Montgomery Mustangs in a Pioneer district meeting.

CMS Volleyball Announces Open Gym Information for Fall Season

June 16, 2026
COVINGTON, Va. (VR) - Thursday, June 18, Thirsty Thursday returns to the Jack Shack as the Covington Lumberjacks host a full night of baseball, community, and promotions. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
Olde Town Covington is bringing the full effort for the night, highlighted by unheard-of $1 beer and soda specials throughout the ballpark. Fans are encouraged to arrive early, grab a seat, and kick off the weekend a day ahead of schedule while supporting the Jacks.
With the summer heat settling in, it appears it may finally be getting to Kester—pushing him to bring this special Thirsty Thursday promotion to the ballpark to help fans cool off and enjoy a midweek night out under the lights.
Hall of Fame sponsor Covington Moose Lodge No. 610 will be featured throughout the evening, with members invited to stick around after the game for a special meet-and-greet with the players.
Adding to the night, Pour Mare will be on-site with the ladies offering coffees and refreshers for fans throughout the game, giving a mix of cold drinks, hot coffee, and everything in between.
Between the $1 specials, community involvement, and a packed summer crowd expected, Thirsty Thursday is set to be one of the most energetic nights of the season at the Jack Shack as Covington looks to defend home turf and chase a win.
