LOW MOOR, VA- Another Covington-Allegany battle has come to an end.
Not to be outdone by the fireworks in the varsity matchup last week, the Mountaineers and Cougars JV teams took the field immediately following the varsity contest.
Alleghany jumped ahead early, and despite a 7-run fourth inning from the Cougars, the Mounties took home a 23-7 win after four-and-a-half innings.
The Mountaineers put up seven runs on four hits in the bottom of the first frame. Kai Rowland, Keegan Morris, Davin May, and Graham Brewster were responsible for the four base-knocks as Alleghany took control early.
Brewster also got some work on the mound and outside of a batter he hit with a pitch, all three outs he recorded were strikeouts, and the Cougars were retired and unable to cut into the deficit.
Alleghany then basically ended the game in the second inning when they put up nine runs in what seemed like a never-ending episode. The Mountaineers pounded out five hits and were the recipients of six walks, including Austin Jack getting hit with a pitch. Brady May’s double, and Jalen Raether and Brandon Nickell’s RBI walks capped the scoring, and after two Alleghany had extended their insurmountable lead to 16-0.
However, give credit to the Cougars. After the Mounties went up 19-0 after three, Covington could have laid down and quit, but they stayed resilient and kept fighting.
They fought so much that they had a 7-run inning of their own. After a walk and a hit-by-pitch, Braylon Johnston singled, then a couple batters later, Miguel Johnson got an RBI base hit as well. That made the score 19-3. Mark Hunter then ripped an RBI single which was soon followed by an RBI triple from Joseph Rogers for the final Cougar runs.
A 2-run single from Tucker Phillips concluded the game’s scoring.
Keaton Fisher, Rowland, Phillips, and Morris each had two hits. Brewster, Phillips and Morris all drove in three runs apiece. May led the team with four runs scored.
Johnson went 2-2 with a run and RBI for Covington.
Brewster pitched three innings, gave up just one hit and struck out eight. Brandon Nickell and Zeke Saville also pitched some relief innings.
