The Town of Clifton Forge will be offering 10 raised-bed garden plots for rent to the residents of Alleghany County. First preference will be given to citizens of the Town of Clifton Forge, and then to County residents, on a first come first served basis. Of these plots, 8 will be rectangular beds. The other 2 will be U-shaped and designated for wheelchair or other mobility device users. All beds will be approximately 32 square feet.
The Community Garden is located at the head of Smith Creek Trail and is part of the Clifton Forge Sensory Trail and Community Garden Project. At this time we will only offer to rent one plot per individual or family unit. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. For those wanting to lease a second plot a waiting list will be established and any remaining plots will be offered on a first-come first served basis.
If the U-shaped plots are not rented out by mobility device users we will open those remaining plots with first preference being given to individuals over the age of 60, as they can be worked easily from a seated position.
Within the first two weeks of the opening date of the garden, plot renters will be able to cancel their plot rental with a full refund. Canceling after that two-week window will result in the renter losing the rental fee. Returned plots will be offered to the waiting list in order of application date.
Applications open on March 15, 2023 and will close on May 15, 2023, but the plots will be filled in order of application date, so submit your application and fee ASAP. The 2023 plot rental fee is $35, payable in person by Check or Credit Card at Clifton Forge Town Hall. Checks should be made payable to the Town of Clifton Forge. The Town of Clifton Forge Will Provide the Following Services:
Plots will be filled with loose soil by the opening date of use. A limited number of gardening tools will be provided for use.
Plot renters will be given an access code to the locked tool storage shed on site. Plot renters will have access to water.
Plot renters will have access to compost bins.
Plot renters will have access to garbage bins and garbage pickup is provided. Picnic Tables, benches, chairs, and grills will be located within the garden area. A community information bulletin board/kiosk will be located in the garden area. Limited parking will be available.
