Alleghany County Public Schools has inducted the inaugural class of its Employee Hall of Fame.
The three members — Elisabeth “Betsy” Carter, Jeff Bartley and Dorothy Bartley — were recognized Monday, Sept. 21, during an Alleghany County School Board meeting.
Betsy retired in 2009 after  38 years in education. She taught at Central, Callaghan and Sharon Elementary schools and Clifton Middle School while in Alleghany County. She  also taught for several years in Warren County.
Betsy received her bachelor’s degree from Concord College and her master’s degree from the University of Virginia. She was the first Alleghany County Public Schools teacher to receive National Board Certification.
“Betsy Carter will always be an educator whether it be with children or adults,” said retired CMS Principal Brenda Siple. “Her willingness to help with whatever the needs may be and her bright smile which brings comfort is a part of who she is.”
Dorothy Bartley  retired in 2014 after 38 years in education, and taught math at Alleghany High School for her entire career.
She received her bachelor’s degree from Madison College.
Jeff Bartley also retired in 2014 after 38 years in education, having taught history and social studies at AHS for his entire career. He received his bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech.
“Dorothy and Jeff Bartley represent a cornerstone of Alleghany High School, serving as teachers, coaches, club sponsors, prom sponsors, mentors and tutors,” said Fred Vaughan, director of Human Resources and Pupil Personnel for Alleghany County Public Schools. “Both are highly respected by students and staff and know to challenge students to be their best.
“These three inductees truly exemplify the Alleghany County Public Schools and have without a doubt had a long lasting impact on our community,” Vaughan added.
Alleghany County Public Schools will begin accepting nominations for the second Employee Hall of Fame class in late October.
