FLOYD COUNTY – The Floyd County Buffaloes (18-4, 8-2) ended the Alleghany Mountaineers (10-12, 1-9) four-game win streak Thursday night following an 80-58 win.
it was raining three-pointers all game long.
The Buffaloes just made a few more than the Mountaineers as the Buffaloes knocked down 15 three-pointers which helped push them past the Mountaineers who made four with all of them coming from Chase DePriest.
From the opening tip, the Buffaloes were in control as they took a quick 11-2 lead in which they made three three-pointers during that stretch.
Following a timeout from Mountaineer head coach, Nolan Caldwell, the Mountaineers would close the gap quickly and within two minutes were down just three points following an 8-2 scoring run highlighted by two C. DePriest three-pointers.
With a three point lead going into the second quarter, the Buffaloes opened the second period much like they did the first by knocking down three-pointers.
In the first few minutes of the second quarter, the first six baskets made from both teams were three-pointers.
The Buffaloes though went on a scoring run and during that stretch at the beginning of the second quarter they outscored the Mountaineers 14-6 which built themselves an 11 point lead. AJ Cantrell was at the front of the Buffaloes scoring run as he knocked down three three-pointers to help the team build a double digit lead.
The Mountaineers would not go away and eventually got within seven points at 34-27 following a Halen Lowman layup.
The two teams would just about trade-off points the rest of the first half.
Despite the Buffaloes hitting seven three-pointers in the second quarter and 10 in the first half, the Mountaineers would only be down 10 points going into the second half, 40-30.
As the second half began, the three-pointers kept coming from the Buffaloes who went on an 11-0 scoring run to take a 54-33 lead. This time it was Micah Underwood at the front of the run for the Buffaloes as he knocked down three three-pointers.
The Buffaloes would push their lead to as high as 21 in the quarter.
The Mountaineers had a moment in the third period where Ryan Cole, Eli Entsminger, and C. DePriest built a small scoring run to cut the deficit down to 17, but that would be the closest the Mountaineers would get the rest of the way.
The Buffaloes in the fourth quarter would increase their lead to as high as 25 points.
Micah Underwood led all scorers with a game-high 21 points for the Buffaloes, including a game-high five three-pointers. Underwood was one of four to reach double figures scoring as Cantrell and Gavin Herrington each scored 13, while Mason Cockram added 11.
The Mountaineers were led by C. DePriest who scored a team and season-high 19 points, along with his four made three-pointers. Ryan Cole was the other Mountaineer in double figures scoring with 12.
As the Mountaineers regular season wrapped up Thursday, they will next head towards the Class 2, Region C tournament where they will be have a home first round game against either Appomattox County or Nelson County this coming Friday.
Meanwhile, the JV Mountaineers finished its regular season by winning the Three Rivers District regular season title with a 59-54 win over the Buffaloes. The JV Mountaineers will play at home at Mountaineer Arena Monday evening at 6:00 p.m. against Radford for the TRD JV championship.
