The cover of Chesapeake & Ohio Railway in Alderson, West Virginia shows C&O Railway train No.4, The Sportsman, pausing for its station stop at Alderson at 8:35 a. m. It has three E8 diesel locomotives and 17 cars and is traveling as a combined train from the C&O’s western terminals at Cincinnati, Detroit, and Louisville headed for both Newport News, Va. and Washington (and points east as far as New York). It was one of the last remnants of the C&O’s great passenger service that linked small-town Alderson with the great cities, illustrating the railway as the true“metropolitan corridor” (Photo courtesy Chesapeake & Ohio Historical Society)
