Trailing by three points entering the fourth quarter, the Alleghany Lady Mountaineers (9-5, 2-3) outscored the James River Lady Knights (9-5, 1-4) 17-8 in the fourth quarter to snap their three-game losing streak on Monday.
The third quarter played crucial in the Lady Mountaineers come back. The team trailed by as much as 12 points in the third period before cutting the score down to three points.
The Lady Mountaineers were backed by Bryce Leitch’s game and season-high 20 points. Leitch is the third Lady Mountaineers to score 20 or more points this season in a game along with Keene and Macyn Cash.
Free throws played a critical role for the Lady Mountaineers in the victory as down the stretch, the Kendell Keene in the final period alone made seven. Keene finished with 14 points.
Sydnee Breeding led the way for the Lady Knights with a team-high 15 points. Breeding knocked down three three-pointers. Meanwhile Caitlin Canada scored 11.
Heading into their matchup on Monday, the Lady Mountaineers had been outscored 170-85 during their three-game losing streak which included 30 and 40+ losses.
After a big road victory against a good Lady Knights team, the Lady Mountaineers are headed back in the right direction and will look to keep the momentum going this Friday when the team returns to Mountaineer Arena to host the Radford Lady Bobcats.
The Lady Mountaineers defeated the Lady Bobcats on the road 52-28 on January 4th.
