COVINGTON, Va, (VR) – Covington City Council approved an agreement Tuesday for the upgrade of the P25 public safety radio system, with the city’s share of the estimated $1 million project totaling $203,750.63.
Jonathan Fitch, Alleghany County public service director, told council the six-year-old system needs software and hardware upgrades to remain reliable as it continues to serve the area’s emergency and public safety agencies.
The system is shared by Alleghany County and the City of Covington, with portions also used by Rockbridge County and Alleghany Highlands Public Schools. Fitch said all tower sites will be upgraded as part of the project. The overall cost is estimated at approximately $1 million, with Covington responsible for $203,750.63.
The project is expected to take approximately 18 months to complete, with the end of 2027 targeted for completion if equipment and installation remain on schedule. Council approved the cost-sharing agreement.
Council also approved a proclamation declaring Nov. 1, 2026, as Extra Mile Day in Covington, recognizing individuals and organizations for their volunteer service and contributions to the community.
Resolution R-26-27, appropriating $669,664.29 in Columbia Gas road repair reimbursement funds, was approved for paving and repairs to city streets affected by previous utility work. The initial work will include areas around Altamont, Route 18, Carlton, Carpenter and Dolly Ann Drive, with work expected to begin soon.
Council also approved Resolution R-26-28, reappropriating remaining fiscal year 2025-26 carryover, grant, enterprise and project funds for approved city programs and projects during fiscal year 2026-27.
September work session and meeting minutes were approved.
During his city manager’s report, Allen Dressler told council Mayor Hunter is hospitalized with health issues and asked members to keep him in their prayers. Dressler said Pumpkins in the Park at the sports complex and Hometown Halloween are approaching.
He also praised this year’s Farm Fest and the Alleghany High School FFA for its work on the event, noting that planning for next year has already begun.
Dressler recognized Alleghany High School cross country coach Jeremy Bartley for how smooth the Alleghany Invitational went and thanked Josh Taylor of the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce for Tuesday’s tourism summit in Clifton Forge.
