Heading into their Tuesday night Three Rivers District showdown with the Glenvar Highlanders (8-5/2-1), the Alleghany Mountaineers (6-6/0-4) had played in several closely contested basketball games.
On Tuesday, it was nothing short of another nail biting finish.
Playing in their second straight overtime game, the Mountaineers needed one more stop to force a second overtime.
As the game clock winded down, Gabe Ford sank a buzzer-beating three-pointer to lift the Highlanders past the Mountaineers 57-54.
The loss was the Mountaineers fourth in a row and second straight overtime loss. The team lost to the Carroll County Cavaliers by the same score 57-54 in overtime at the Chance Harman Classic last Friday. It was a buzzer-beater that helped send the game in overtime that day for the Cavaliers.
Despite the loss, the Mountaineers needed a second half comeback to extend the game.
In the first half, the team was held to just 12 points and trailed by 15 points, 27-12 at the halftime break. The Mountaineers were held to four points in the first quarter.
Ford led the Highlanders in scoring with a team-high 16 points, while Brody Dawyot added 11.
In the loss, the Mountaineers were led by Hunter DePriest who scored a game-high 17 points. Chris Harden was the other Mountaineer in double-figures scoring with 14.
The Mountaineers hosted the Cavaliers last night. The game was originally scheduled for this evening.
