Fern Lee Showalter Cook, age 93, of 3107 Longdale Furnace Road, Clifton Forge, Virginia died Thursday, December 29, 2022 at her residence.
Fern was born April 17, 1929 in Iron Gate, Virginia to the late Lloyd William Showalter, Sr. and Zephya Fisher Showalter. She was a retired Registered Nurse whose nursing career spanned many years at the Chesapeake and Ohio Hospital in Clifton Forge and Alleghany Regional Hospital in Low Moor. She was a member of Iron Gate United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, Fern was preceded in death by her husband, Mongo Randolph Cook; three sisters, Marion Morrel, Joyce Virginia Adkins, and Harriet Faye Showalter; four brothers, Ray Dean “Preach” Showalter, Lloyd William “Butch” Showalter, James Earl Showalter, and Eric Homer Showalter: and a son-in-law, Wesley L. Snead, Jr.
She is survived by three daughters, Debra C. Snead of Clifton Forge, Tami C. Ricketts and husband Scott of Richmond, and Leigh C. Blevins and husband Jeff of Kill Devil Hills, NC; a sister-in-law, Beverly Roberts of Moneta; six grandchildren, Heather S. Hogan, Jill S. Wheelin, Laura Ricketts, Taylor Ricketts, Joey Blevins, and Matt Blevins; seven great grandchildren, Isabella, Abby, Brady, Mason, Lily, Madison, and Lincoln, as well as one great grandchild “on the way”; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held on Monday, January 2, 2023 at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Grover Nicely officiating. Interment followed in Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor. Pallbearers were Joey Blevins, Matt Blevins, Jeff Blevins, Scott Ricketts, Taylor Ricketts, Vince Hogan, and Mike Wheelin. The family received friends on Monday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of service at Nicely Funeral Home.
