After an 0-7 start to their season, the Covington Cougars (3-7/3-2) headed into their Friday night Pioneer District game with the Craig County Rockets (2-6/0-5) controlling their own playoff destiny.
On the road, the Cougars for the third week in a row won by 30+ points following a 54-24 victory over the Rockets.
The Cougars with the win are now in the Class 1, Region C playoff tournament as the sixth seed and will play at the Pioneer District Champion, Narrows Green Wave tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. To further read about this matchup, read the playoff preview section.
Desmond Jordan, who surpassed the 1,000 passing mark last week in a 46-7 victory over Eastern Montgomery, passed for over 100 yards once more as he finished the game a perfect 6-for-6 passing with 177 yards and a season-high four touchdowns for the Cougars.
In the win, Purcel Turner caught touchdown passes six and seven, while Luke Conner caught his first touchdown pass of the season.
Along with the passing game, the running game proved to just as effective for the Cougars as the Rockets couldn’t slow down both Neeko Jeter and Rocklynn Phillips, whom each found the end zone twice in the rushing attack. For Jeter, it was touchdown runs, three and four on the season, with all four coming in the last two games.
Despite giving up 24 points on defense, the Cougars grabbed a defensive touchdown coming from J’yon Smith who had an interception returned to the end zone.
The Rockets up and down season came to an end. In the loss to the Cougars, they grabbed three total touchdowns from Zachary Peters, two passing and one rushing.
