The Covington Cougars (22-5) varsity volleyball season came to an end on Thursday following a straight set loss to the Auburn Eagles in the Class 1, Region C tournament.
The Cougars were one victory away from the schools first ever volleyball state tournament berth.
In the loss, the Cougars were led by Aubrey Brown, who had a nine kill, seven dig performance. Meanwhile, the team leaders included Lexi Dressler who had a team-high nine assists, while Jayanha Hughes added a team-high 10 digs.
The Eagles grabbed a big performance from Madison Ketterner who had 33 assists, while Madeline Lavergne added a game-high 12 kills.
While the Cougars came up short of the state tournament, the team finished the season with a 22-5 record and won the Pioneer District regular season and tournament championships.
In the loss, Cougars head coach Mary Tyree’s coaching career has come to an end. Tyree was set to retire at the completion of the season.
The Eagles will now play Giles Spartans who beat Eastern Montgomery in the other semifinal matchup. The Eagles and Spartans will meet in Wednesday’s regional championship game. Both teams have qualified for the state tournament with their semifinal wins.
