County Girls Win Fair Prizes
Checks have just reached the Alleghany County Club girls for prizes won at the Virginia State Fair. Emma Hamlet of upper Rich Patch, won first place on pickle, second prize on a collection of canned fruit, second prize on second year canning exhibit and second prize on canning club record book. She is only 12 years old and has put up 136 containers in different varieties of fruits and vegetables, pickles and marmalades. Mildred Laurman, of Longdale Club, won first prize on her second year sewing club record book. Maudie Norcross, of Low Moor Club, won third prize on soda biscuits in entries of at least 100.

U.S. Scientists Pondering POwre Source Of Sputnik
The West today weighed the significance of a Russian announcement that new instruments and sources of power were used to send Sputnik II and its dog passenger more than 1,000 miles into space. Some doubts were expressed that the Russians had used any revolutionary new kind of fuel, but no one could be certain. A-3C Earl (Buddy) West is now assigned to 4900th Supply Squadron, Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M.

Social Security Borrows Funds
For the first time ever, Social Security’s old-age trust fund must borrow money this week from another fund to the system to pay for checks going out to retirees. About $1 billion will be borrowed on Friday from the Disability Insurance Trust Fund, and other components of the Social Security System, said Treasury Secretary Donald T. Regan.

Kindergarten Students Study Apples
Kindergarten students at Edgemont Primary School recently studied Johnny Appleseed as part of their Virginia Standards of Learning requirements for history. As part of the study, the students ate apple snacks, made puppets and dressed like Johnny Appleseed. In the photo below from left, are Nicolas Henry, Kimberly Via, Darian Williams, Morgan Myers and Andrew Nicely. In the back row are Stacy Tacy, Jakob Knick, Karis Saville, Hunter Tallman and Kelsey Whitmore.
