The Covington Cougars (22-4) varsity volleyball team is within one win of school history.
A win Thursday night would secure CHS’ first ever trip to the volleyball state tournament.
This was all possible following the Cougars first round, Class 1, Region C tournament straight-set victory over the Grayson County Blue Devils (11-12) Tuesday night at the Cougar Den.
The Blue Devils out of the Mountain Empire District couldn’t withstand the “runs”.
The Cougars and Blue Devils midway through the first set was tightly played as the Cougars hung onto a slim 13-9 lead, but then the Cougars went on with one of those “runs” and outscored the Blues Devils 12-5 the rest of the way in first set to pick up a 25-14 win.
During the second set, it was much of the same in the second set as the Cougars used a big 13-2 scoring run to cap off a 25-16 second set victory.
Despite a small rally in which the Blue Devils went on a 9-4 scoring run towards the end of the third and final set, the Cougars hung on to win the set 25-18.
Of the 39 kills recorded by the Cougars, the team was led by Aubrey Brown who had 15 for the game, while Kaiya Lian added 13.
The Cougars also grabbed big performances from Lexi Dressler who dished out 20 assists, while Jayahna Hughes added 11. The defense was just as superb for the Cougars as they only committed 11 total errors in the three sets.
This all leads us to last night’s semifinal matchup with the Auburn Eagles.
A win for the Cougars not only guarantees them the schools first every state tournament berth in volleyball, it also puts the Cougars in the regional championship game. The other semifinal game was played by Eastern Montgomery and Giles.
