The Sharon Ruritan Club has successfully completed its fall apple butter-making process. Over a recent weekend all Sharon Ruritans participated in the event that requires the preparation of two large copper kettles, each with an automatic stirrer. The cooking continues for at least 24 hours with someone present to oversee the fire and cooking process. The addition of the spices is the last of the cooking process and must be sampled and approved before the final act of canning the apple butter.
Sadly, because of the rising cost of ingredients and canning jars, the Ruritans have been forced to raise the prices of selling their apple butter. This year pints will sell for $7 each and quarts for $12 each. The Ruritans will again participate in the Clifton Forge Shriners’ Fall Festival where apple butter in addition to pork barbecues, desserts and drinks will be sold.
The Sharon Ruritans greatly appreciate the public support. All profit from Ruritan sales goes back into the community through support of numerous activities and needs. The Ruritans are continually looking for new members and new ideas to assist in our support of community programs and needs. For more information contact President Mike Layton at 540 862-2151 or Secretary Linda Archer at 434 609-2968. The club usually holds monthly dinner meetings at 6 pm on the second Tuesday at their clubhouse on the right side of Nicelytown Road just past the Sharon Fire Department. Call for more information and join us for the meeting.
