Covington, Va. (VR) – The meeting was called to order by Julie Stanley.

Those in attendance:

8/29- Julie Stanley, Jennifer Smith, Brad Armentrout, Jamie Hale, Marian Paxton, Theresa Hammond, Tom Sibold, Terri McClung.

8/30- Marian Paxton, Julie Stanley, Donna Miller, Tom Sibold, David Bryant, Cindy Bryant, Brad Armentrout, Rylee Reynolds, Mr.Cad.

MINUTES – Approved

TREASURER’S REPORT – The current balances are OTC-$34,709.94 and C&P-$22,078.73.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

ORGANIZATION – Olde Town Covington, 450 W. Main Street, Suite 100, office hours 12:00 to 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, (540) 969-4424, Julie@oldetowncovington.com. Rylee Reynolds, Rylee@oldetowncovington.com, continues to make progress as the part-time secretary for OTC.

  • Jennifer Smith has been closely working with OTC to come up with awesome fundraising ideas. Thank you, Jennifer! We appreciate you.

BOARD MEMBERS

Paul Linkenhoker – President, Julie Stanley-Vice President, Jamie Hale-Treasurer, Jennifer Smith, Marian Paxton, Brad Armentrout, Thomas Smals, David Crosier,

WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT – John Morris has stayed in close contact with Rylee Reynolds about upcoming events to add to the website. Continuing to work on our rack cards.

BUDGET COMMITTEE- Members to be determined…

ECONOMIC RESTRUCTURING

EDC UPDATE – Terri McClung was present.

  • Olde Town Miniature Golf continues to stay busy, with their hours from 1PM-10PM, every day. Not sure of their hours with the weather changing.
  • Formals and Florals is open, they had their ribbon cutting on August 29th. They will be selling/renting out suites for this Homecoming season.
  • Honeycomb grove meadery, continues to stay open Saturdays from 12-5.
  • Kanawha Cafe has gone into the Cakes Your Way building. They will have both sides of the building. Starting with coffee and later adding baked goods. They had a soft opening August 29th, they will be open Monday through Friday, 5AM-9AM.
  • Peebles building continues to become a brewery by David Bostic. 1st floor-restaurant and tap room, 2nd floor-Event venue, basement-games & such. Progress slowly continues.
  • Good News Christmas Bizarre is December 3rd, also on the same day as the Christmas Parade.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE – The Chamber Golf Tournament went well on September 24th. 12 teams played with a record number of sponsors. Reminder that the Outdoor Survey closes at the end of the month. Pam will be retiring 12/31 and Josh Taylor is returning to the chamber.

  -Meet and greet at Masonic Theatre at 6PM, October 5th with Ben Cline. Q&A.

BUILDING REHABILITATION –

Alleghany Floral Boutique has fixed some issues with their roof.
We are happy to see some action/business in the Primitive Peddler building, now named DJ Pedder. Currently limited hours.
INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE & TECHNOLOGY DISCOVERY CENTER – Will be hosting a “Business After Hours Event” in the upcoming months. Hoping for a Ribbon Cutting before December! The meeting spaces upstairs can also host birthday parties as well. The downstairs room is $50, and the upstairs is $150. FREE to civic group benefactors. Volunteers are needed!

COMMERCIAL DISTRICT ADDRESS NUMBERING & SIGNAGE – The sign out front of Walmart can hopefully become a start in progress after the CHS reunion, when we have more time to focus on that.

  • The clock on Main St. is now working.

PROJECT SPARKLE- Hopefully an update will be announced soon

PROMOTIONS AND SPECIAL EVENTS

FARMER’S MARKET – No longer open, they will have a fall festival type of event sometime in October.

We continue to hear all good things about this and the delicious/creative things our Farmers Market brings!

HOMETOWN HALLOWEEN – October 28th, 5-7PM. Cary Linkswiler is coordinating this event. She is working closely with Parks and Rec which is going well! I recently sent out an email seeking participants for this event.

CORK AND PORK- June 2-3, 2023. A few old competitors, like JD Smokin, had retired but will continue to come to C&P.

FIREMEN’S FESTIVAL-with carnival games in Rosedale Park, also set up during C&P. May 31-June 3, 2023. The prize this upcoming year will be $10,000. The website is up and running again, covingtoncorkandpork.com. Will apply to the Smithfield grant, will also reach out to SPEED and try to partner with them in someway (backyard contest). OTC will assist them in getting letters prepared to send out in January.

CHAMBER MARATHON- June 3, will be during the same weekend as C&P.

ALL ALUMNI COVINGTON HIGH SCHOOL REUNION- Changes have been made for this event! We had a smaller reunion at the Covington armory Saturday, October 1st for those who had already came from out of town. October 14th is the All-Alumni Football game, if you are with the band, color guard, cheerleader, majorette, etc. you will meet in the band room at 5:30PM. October 15th is the reunion on Casey Field. We have high expectations for the turnout of this event on the 15th, ornaments will be sold at these events as well.

FARM @ GLEN HAVEN, SOCIAL- October 19th at 5:30PM. Meal/intro at 6:30PM. FREE for newcomers. Locals do need to pay.

DIY DOOR HANGER- $40-$50 per person, 2ish hours. Hosted at the Discovery Center, November, Saturday 12th or the 19th. Christmas themed! More to come on this event…

PARKS AND REC EVENTS- Mountain Magic/Pumpkin October 29th, at 2PM.

  -Hometown Christmas Event/Tree Lighting November 26th at 6PM.

OLD BUSINESS

Ornaments came in on 8/30, we have started to sell these and the demand is strong!

NEW BUSINESS

  -We can now take Square payment for upcoming events, this allows us to care debit/credit cards.

  -The Christmas Parade theme was chosen, Christmas Traditions.

  -If you know of any local individual, business, or organization that would like to participate in Hometown Halloween please   let myself or Cary Linkswiler know!

Our next board meeting will be October 24th, 12pm at OTC office 450 W. Main St.

Our next Volunteer/Members meeting will be October 25, 5:30pm at the OTC office 450 W. Main St.

There being no more business, the meeting was adjourned.
