Clifton Forge, Va. (VR) – The Main Street movement grew out of the recognition that a community is only as strong as its core. In an era when many folks had given up hope about the commercial and cultural viability of downtowns – when suburbs, shopping malls, and big box retailers were dominating the American landscape, seemingly without end, the Main Street concept seemed an unlikely proposition. However, over the last several decades, the Main Street movement has proven that downtowns are indeed the heart of our communities. Here in Clifton Forge we need to be sure that our Main Street program remains a positive force for our Downtown Historic District.

Across the country, small communities have used the Main Street approach to transform their economies, leverage local leadership, and improve the overall quality of citizens’ lives. Dollar for dollar, the Main Street approach has proven to be one of the most impactful, cost-effective community revitalization models. We are blessed to have a Main Street organization here in Clifton Forge. Many small communities do not have such a program. Our Clifton Forge Main Street program believes that everyone should have access to a strong and vibrant downtown– a place that has a thriving economy – that is rich in character – where visitors feel welcomed. Our small town has changed a lot over the last decades since the railroad shops closed. We have needed to re-invent ourselves. Revitalization is very challenging work but our Main Street program has offered a road map for locally owned, locally driven prosperity. Downtowns are important because they are the heart and soul of any small community. A healthy downtown is critical to a healthy town.

Our Clifton Forge Main Street program is a community driven program. To keep our downtown healthy and moving forward, Main Street needs the help of everyone who call our town home. Clifton Forge Main Street can continue to make a difference here, but we can’t do it alone. We need the help of our Clifton Forge family. Clifton Forge is a town with deep roots and a profound heritage. We want everyone to continue to feel not only pride in our heritage, but a sense of great pride in all we have to offer today. We want the word to spread far and wide that Clifton Forge is a great place to visit and a special place to live, work and play. We want everyone to see us as the gem of the Alleghany Highlands.

Please call the Main Street office at (540) 862-2000 for more information on how you can help us continue to keep Clifton Forge moving forward.
